Subject: | “International Overdose Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing August 31, 2017, as “International Overdose Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania. Advocates, community organizations, health care providers, and government agencies recognize “International Overdose Awareness Day” in an effort to raise awareness of drug overdose, reduce the stigma associated with drug-related death, and remind individuals of the risks of drug abuse. Rising statistics on drug-related deaths, the majority of which are attributable to the use of opioids, signify the need to join this global effort. In 2016, approximately 13 people died of a drug-related overdose each day in Pennsylvania. In their memory, and in support of their loved ones, I hope you will consider co-sponsoring this resolution which will encourage further discussion on overdose prevention and drug policy. Your consideration and co-sponsorship are appreciated. |
