MEMORANDUM

Subject: Required Posting of Staff Levels and Violations in Nursing Homes

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that will require long term care nursing facilities to post information about health care practitioner staffing levels in the facility. Although, there are currently only mandated staffing ratios for skilled nursing, there are other vital staffing positions that are not required to have specific ratios in statute. I am seriously concerned that the only specific ratio for individuals in a long term care facility are 2.7 hours of direct nursing care in a 24 hour period.

Our constituents should be able to access staffing levels whenever they walk into a nursing home. Then, the family can decide, based on that information, whether that nursing facility is the right place for their loved one, even if it is on a temporary basis. I believe that violations should be posted as well to aid in the decision making process.

This way, if a family felt that staffing levels were too low, or their loved one was not receiving adequate attention, they could question the administration in a knowledgeable fashion regarding the current staffing levels. And possibly, it could lead to more appropriate staffing levels, if they fell short of resident and family expectations.

Please join me in sponsoring this legislation intended to better protect our constituents who might be housed in a long term care facility.
