MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 10, 2017 11:46 AM
From: Representative Patty Kim
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Designating June 27, 2017 as “National HIV Testing Day”

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating June 27, 2017 as “National HIV Testing Day” in Pennsylvania.

As of this writing, there are approximately 1.2 million people in the United States who are living with HIV, with roughly 40,000 cases of newly infected people each year. Although there has been a tremendous degree of progress made in the way of fostering greater awareness about HIV and preventing its spread, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still recommends routine HIV testing for all patients between the ages of 15 and 65, regardless of risk factors.

Therefore, it is critically important for us to encourage individuals who are HIV-positive to find out their status so that they may start the process of obtaining counseling on how to manage their health, accessing appropriate medical and social services, beginning life-prolonging treatments, and being proactive in preventing the spread of the virus to others.

I hope you will please consider joining me as a co-sponsor of this very meaningful resolution.
