Subject: | Transportation of Firearms |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation which simplifies state law concerning the transportation of firearms in Pennsylvania. Current law is confusing and unnecessarily complex. Unfortunately, otherwise law-abiding gun owners can inadvertently commit a crime if, for example, the gun owner without a license to carry a concealed firearm simply stops at the grocery store on the way home from target shooting at a range. My legislation will replace the unnecessarily complicated current law with a straightforward rule: A lawful gun owner may transport a firearm for a lawful purpose as long as it is unloaded and not directly accessible to an occupant in the vehicle. This concept of safe and legal transportation of unloaded firearms would be consistent with well-known restrictions in federal law, as well as with the laws of states as varied as Vermont, Iowa and Michigan. I hope you will join me in simplifying current Pennsylvania law in a responsible way that assures the safety of our officers and the public. |
