Subject: Co-Sponsorship: Resolution recognizing April 7, 2017 as “World Health Day” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing April 7, 2017 as “World Health Day” in Pennsylvania.

As you may know, “World Health Day” annually elaborates on the global health priorities of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations. April 7 is the date of the WHO’s founding in 1948 and is set aside for the global observance of “World Health Day” to mobilize action around a specific health topic of concern to people all over the world. The theme for the 2017 “World Health Day” campaign is depression, with a particular focus on the three groups that are disproportionately affected: adolescents and young adults, women of childbearing age, and adults over the age of 60.

Depression is an illness characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that one usually enjoys, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, for at least two weeks. Depression is a common mental disorder and can be effectively prevented and treated by talking therapy, antidepressant medication or a combination of these. A better understanding of what depression is, and how it can be prevented and treated, will help reduce the stigma associated with the condition and lead to more people seeking help.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution to inform the general public about depression, its causes, possible consequences, and what help is or can be available for prevention and treatment.
