Subject: | Partially Exempt Property Taxes from Convention Centers Owned by Authority, Municipality or County |
In the near future, I will introduce legislation to clarify that convention centers owned by an authority or municipality or county are only partially exempt from property taxes. There are about 50 hotels in Erie County and they all pay property taxes except for two that are beside the Bayfront Convention Center. Because these two hotels provide no acts of charity, no free rooms or meals for anyone, no religious services, no educational services and no uncompensated medical care, they do not fit the definition of what should be considered exempt from property taxes. My legislation would ensure that the main buildings are exempt, such as the convention hall that is used for actual events. Auxiliary buildings such as a tool shed would also be tax exempt. My intent is to make certain that buildings such as hotels and restaurants that are owned, leased or operated by the convention center are subject to property tax. I would greatly appreciate your support and co-sponsorship of this legislation. |
