MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 9, 2017 02:53 PM
From: Representative John Taylor
To: All House members
Subject: Criminal Court Fees

I intend to introduce legislation that would adjust criminal court fees for the City of Philadelphia for the first time since 1984.

Philadelphia criminal court fees are set by statute. That statute was enacted in 1984 without a mechanism for the fees to be increased to keep pace with inflation. Since 1984, however, the Consumer Price Indexes (CPI) have increased 129%. This legislation would increase fees by less than this rate of inflation by simply doubling the fees.

By way of illustration, the fees for an expungement would rise from $15 to $30 and the fee to file an application for a detective license would increase from $12.50 to $25. These relatively modest increases would provide important additional funds to operate Philadelphia's criminal justice system.

I hope you will join me in sponsoring this legislation. Thank you.
