Subject: | Requesting Co-sponsorship: Paid Sick Leave |
In the near future, I plan to re-introduce House Bill 624 of the 2015-2016 Legislative Session. This measure seeks to provide paid sick leave to Pennsylvania workers. Many of the workers in this Commonwealth, especially those earning lower wages, are not entitled to paid time-off from work to care for their own medical needs or the needs of their family members. Often, they must make the difficult decision between losing a day’s pay and going to work ill, risking the spread of illness to others. My legislation would ensure all workers are given the opportunity to earn a minimum amount of sick leave. Specifically, most public and private workers will be permitted to accrue paid sick leave at a rate of one hour of leave time for every 40 hours worked, up to a maximum of 52 hours per calendar year. Small employers with less than 10 employees would provide employees with one hour of leave time per 80 hours worked, up to a maximum of 26 hours per year. Once an employee has earned paid sick time, it may be used it to care for their own illness, injury or medical treatment or to look after the medical needs of a “family member”. “Family members” under my measure include a spouse, child, parent, or other close relative. Affording workers paid sick time to care for themselves and their families assures a more healthy and productive workforce in Pennsylvania. I hope that you will join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. Previous Cosponsors: |
