MEMORANDUM

From: Representative Thomas R. Caltagirone
To: All House members
Subject: Pediatric Cancer Research Vehicle Registration & Drivers License Check-Off

As many of you know I have been aggressively promoting my package of pediatric cancer research funding bills over the past several session. This is my fourth bill in the package with more to come. This bill will require the Department of Transportation, within one year, to provide applicants for an original or renewal driver's license or identification card with the opportunity to contribute $5 to pediatric cancer research. The legislation will provide the same opportunity on a vehicle registration renewals form. Pennsylvanians will have the OPTION to contribute $5.00 to the research efforts at OUR four pediatric research institutions.

It breaks my heart to see these children suffer and its a tragedy when they lose the fight against pediatric cancer. Here is a snap shot of the numbers:

7, number of children that will die today from pediatric cancer.
46, number of children that will be diagnosed with cancer today.
1 in 5, the number of children that will eventually die from cancer.
Pediatric cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children ages 1-14.
8, average age of death for a child with pediatric cancer.
Over the last 20 years only 1 new cancer drug has been approved for pediatric use.
Less than 4%, the percentage of funds directed toward pediatric cancer research by the National Cancer Institute.
4, number of research institutions in Pennsylvania working on cutting edge research to develop better treatments and ways to combat cancer in our kids.

The money raised through this legislation will make a difference in this war on pediatric cancer. It’s time we take real action to fund a cure.

Please join me and give these children and their families hope. #FTK
