MEMORANDUM

Subject: Requiring Automatic External Defibrillators at Sports Events

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that would require all middle and high schools in the state to be equipped with an automatic external defibrillator (AED). Additionally, this legislation would require an AED to be on-site at all school-sponsored athletic events, along with an individual trained in its use.

Approximately 300,000 individuals in the United States are victims of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) each year. Strenuous physical activity puts students at an increased risk of SCA. Defibrillation can increase the chance of survival for those who suffer SCA to close to 90 percent. Every minute defibrillation is delayed decreases the chance of survival by 5 to 7 percent. By having AEDs on site at sporting events, the time between cardiac arrest and defibrillation is greatly reduced to increase the chance of survival.

Please join me in cosponsoring this important legislation.
