Subject: Co-Sponsorship: Recognizing the Month of May 2018 as “National Drug Court Month” in Pennsylvania

In the coming days, I plan to introduce a Resolution recognizing the month of May 2018 as “National Drug Court Month” in Pennsylvania.

As you may know, the expansion of drug courts has been a key reform in the fight against drug abuse and criminality in many jurisdictions. Judges in these courts work with a community team to develop a case plan that includes regular court appearances, treatment sessions, monitoring of an offender’s compliance and aftercare. According to the National Institute of Justice, 84% of drug court graduates have not been re-arrested or charged with a serious crime in the first year after their graduation. In addition, according to the Urban Institute, drug courts provide $2.21 in benefits, and add up to $3.36 in benefits among expanded programs for every $1.00 invested.

National Drug Court Month highlights the collective impact of adult drug courts, juvenile drug courts, family dependency treatment courts, tribal healing and wellness courts, DWI/DUI courts, and veteran’s treatment courts. Collectively, these courts have facilitated community partnerships to broadly enhance criminal justice, public safety and public health.

With that said, please join me in co-sponsoring this important Resolution. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (717) 772-9850.
