MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 17, 2016 11:04 AM
From: Representative Katharine M. Watson
To: All House members
Subject: National Adoption Day in Pennsylvania - November 19, 2016

I soon will introduce a House Resolution designating November 19, 2016 as “National Adoption Day” in Pennsylvania.

Adoption provides a child with a lifetime connection to a family, profoundly changing the course of that child’s life by providing stability, security, love and opportunity. As an adoptee and an adoptive parent, I can personally attest to the profoundly positive changes in a child’s life that can result from adoption.

National Adoption Day is a collective national effort to raise awareness of the more than 100,000 children across the United States who are in foster care and waiting to be adopted. This annual, one-day event, celebrated on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, has made the dreams of thousands of children come true by working with policymakers, practitioners and advocates to finalize adoptions, and create and celebrate adoptive families.

Last year, 4,000 children in the United States had their adoptions finalized on the 16th annual National Adoption Day. Since its inception in 2000, National Adoption Day has helped nearly 58,500 children in the United States move from foster care to adoption.

Here in Pennsylvania, more than 2,500 children in Pennsylvania are currently waiting to be adopted. The average wait for a child in foster care to be adopted is three years. Unfortunately, more than 23,000 children across the United States age out of the foster care system every year with no family or permanent home.

This House Resolution serves to raise awareness about National Adoption Day and serves to recognize the collaboration and commitment of both public and private adoption agencies in dedication to the needs of children throughout this Commonwealth and this nation.

I respectfully ask you to join me in sponsoring this House Resolution.
