Subject: | Cosponsor Request - Closing a Loophole for Dispensers in the Prescription Monitoring Program |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation amending Pennsylvania’s Prescription Monitoring Program known as ABC-MAP to require that dispensers query the database when they fill a prescription for a controlled substance. Unfortunately, once the system came on line we discovered some pharmacies are currently using this gap as a means to not participate. The current law allows dispensers, mostly pharmacies, to query the data as a “may” provision. My bill will amend the law requiring a query by changing “may” to “shall” so there is no doubt that such a query is required every time a controlled substance prescription is being filled. A quick social media post enables addicts and dealers to bypass an effective prevention tool. I have met with independent pharmacies, large chains and key personnel in our regional health system. Each of these sectors agrees this will benefit prevention efforts for Pennsylvania. Please join me in co-sponsorship of this important legislation. |
