Subject: Co-Sponsorship: Resolution recognizing the month of October 2016 as “National Depression Education and Awareness Month” and recognizing the week of October 2 through October 8, 2016 as “Mental Health Awareness Week” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I plan to introduce a Resolution recognizing the month of October 2016 as “National Depression Education and Awareness Month” and recognizing the week of October 2 through October 8, 2016 as “Mental Health Awareness Week” in Pennsylvania.

As you know, depression is a serious but treatable chronic mental health condition that has been recognized as a leading cause of disability worldwide. Each year, there are approximately 16 million new cases of depression diagnosed in the United States. Depression related functional impairment is associated with virtually all major depressive episodes. The National Depression Education and Awareness Month notes the impact of depression on individuals and communities and affirms the necessity of early recognition and treatment for maintaining quality of life and preventing relapse.

Furthermore, Mental Health Awareness Week is observed annually during the first week of October. Established by Congress in 1990, this week is used to educate and increase awareness of one’s mental health. At its core, Mental Health Awareness Week is urges the greater understanding of mental health and highlights treatment and recovery from mental illnesses.

Mental health and depression go hand in hand and, as aforementioned, millions of people are afflicted each year. This is precisely why we need to bring awareness and educate our constituencies about these two important issues.

Therefore, it is with these reasons in mind and more that I am offering this Resolution. If you have any questions, please contact my Research Analyst -- Takesha Latham at 717-787-3480 or via email at tlatham@pahouse.net.
