MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 16, 2016 03:04 PM
From: Representative Kate A. Klunk
To: All House members
Subject: Red Ribbon Week 2016

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing October 23rd to October 31st 2016 as “Red Ribbon Week”.

Red Ribbon Week raises awareness of drug use and the problems related to drugs facing our community, and encourages parents, educators, business owners, and other community organizations to promote drug-free lifestyles.

The red ribbon symbolizes a continuing commitment to reducing the demand for illicit drugs in our communities. In 1985, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Enrique S. "Kiki" Camarena was killed by drug traffickers. Shortly after Camarena's death, citizens from his hometown of Calexico, California, began wearing red ribbons to remember him and commemorate his sacrifice. Congress established Red Ribbon Week in 1988.

In my district, the “Hanover Area Young Marines” provide drug abuse and addiction awareness programs to children and youth organizations throughout our community. They are one of thousands of dedicated Pennsylvania community groups participating in Red Ribbon Week this October.

As stewards of the Commonwealth, we must work collectively to spread awareness about drug abuse and encourage participation in drug prevention programs and activities. With the increased use and abuse of heroin and opioids in the Commonwealth, we need to encourage our citizens and local community groups to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse to promote positive drug-free lifestyles. Please join me in cosponsoring this important legislation.

Thank you.
