| Subject: | Resolution – Designating November 2016 as “Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania |
| In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution designating November 2016, as “Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates that 41,780 deaths and 53,070 new cases of pancreatic cancer are expected to occur in the United States in 2016. Unfortunately, the exact cause of pancreatic cancer is unknown. However, risk factors including genetics, age, smoking, obesity, and long-standing diabetes are believed to contribute to the development of pancreatic cancer. There are typically no symptoms during the early stages of pancreatic cancer and it spreads quickly throughout the body making it difficult to detect and harder to treat during later stages. In an effort to help those individuals suffering from pancreatic cancer as well as to focus on public policy, research funding, patient services, public awareness, and developing effective treatments and a cure for pancreatic cancer, organizations such as the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and the National Pancreas Foundation recognize the month of November as “Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.” Please join me in supporting these efforts and designating November 2016 as “Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. |
