Subject: | Resolution Designating September 2016 as "Hunger Action Month" in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the month of September as Hunger Action Month in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This resolution provides a unified opportunity for communities in the United States to focus attention on the persistent problem of domestic hunger and to mobilize a movement to end hunger in America. Hunger is a reality for approximately 14% of the population in Pennsylvania, or nearly one in seven Pennsylvanians. Research shows that preschool and school-age children who experience severe hunger have higher levels of chronic illness, anxiety, depression, and behavioral problems. Studies have also shown that food-insecure seniors are at risk of disability, deteriorating physical and mental health, decreased resistance to infections, and lengthened hospital stays. According to the United States Department of Agriculture approximately 5.5% of all United States households accessed emergency food from a food pantry at least once in 2014. Individuals, charities, businesses, and government all have a role to play in getting food to those in need. I ask that you please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. |
