Subject: Resolution Recognizing the School District of Philadelphia in adding Muslim Holidays to its Calendar
 

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the School District of Philadelphia in adding two Muslim holidays to its school calendar for the upcoming year, making it one of the first school districts in the country to do so.
Our Commonwealth was founded with the intent of religious freedom, which was specifically enumerated in the Pennsylvania Charter of Privileges written by William Penn in 1701. The City of Philadelphia’s estimated 200,000 Muslims comprise a significant portion of the population; it is commendable that the School District has taken steps to allow the Muslim community to celebrate their faith without jeopardizing children’s educational opportunities.
