Subject: Co-Sponsorship of Resolution - Honoring Philadelphia Dance Company, Philadelphia School of Dance Arts, and Founder/Director Dr. Joan Myers Brown

In the near future, I am planning to introduce a resolution honoring the Philadelphia Dance Company (Philadanco), the Philadelphia School of Dance Arts, and the dynamic founder and director of these organizations, Dr. Joan Myers Brown.

Philadanco is an international dance company that is known for its excellence. In 1970, Dr. Joan Myers Brown, Artistic Director, created the company to provide a dance institution for African-American students who were not welcome in other schools and companies. This company has a legacy of breaking barriers and building bridges across cultural divides, consistently performing for audiences representing a combination of people from diverse communities, superbly trained dancers and electrifying performances.

Philadanco is an organization that grew out of the Philadelphia School of Dance Arts, which Dr. Brown founded in 1960. This highly regarded school of dance features professional instructors who offer high level dance training, which is directed at creating generations of well-disciplined dancers who seek professionalism in their craft. The school features all level of classes, annual student performances, and two professional companies in residence. Over the years, the school has trained countless inner city youth and adults in the art of dance.

The Founder and Director of each of these two dance organizations, Dr. Joan Myers Brown has received a multitude of awards and honors throughout her lifetime. Indeed, as a leader who has made significant contributions to the national and international arts communities, Dr. Brown is listed in Who’s Who in America. In 2012, Dr. Brown was recognized for her contributions as a dancer, choreographer, and artistic director at a White House ceremony when she was awarded the National Medal of Arts, which is the nation’s highest civic honor for excellence in the arts.

Please join me in honoring Dr. Brown and these two fine organizations she founded and directs.
