Subject: | RESOLUTION: Atomic Veterans Day in PA |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating July 16, 2016 as "Atomic Veterans Day" in Pennsylvania. Many of our nation's veterans were subjected to varying amounts of radiation due to atomic weapons testing that occurred between 1945 to 1963. At the time of testing, the potential harm to these individuals was unknown. This resulted in exposure to harmful doses of radiation. More than 250,000 veterans and their children, some of which reside in Pennsylvania, may have been adversely affected as a result of the United States testing or detonating nuclear weapons. Numerous veterans who were early test subjects were injured in the line of duty but received no recognition or medals due to the fact that they were never in combat. It is more than appropriate to recognize their sacrifices for this nation's freedom and I urge you to join me in designating July 16th as “Atomic Veteran Day” in Pennsylvania. |
