MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 26, 2016 04:20 PM
From: Representative Gerald J. Mullery
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of Plymouth Borough

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Borough of Plymouth, Luzerne County.

Incorporated in April of 1866, the Borough of Plymouth is currently celebrating the milestone of its sesquicentennial. From its humble beginnings as an agricultural center, to becoming a major supplier for the state’s anthracite coal industry, the citizens of Plymouth have displayed a strong capacity for entrepreneurism.

Over the years, Plymouth has played a notable role in the history of the Commonwealth. The Avondale Mine Disaster of 1869 and its resultant loss of life prompted important mining safety laws in Pennsylvania. Further, the borough was home to Arthur Horace James, who served as Governor of the Commonwealth from 1939 to 1943.

Throughout 2016, Plymouth will celebrate its diverse history, inviting residents and visitors to enjoy parades, celebratory dinners, a kielbasa festival and the opening of a time capsule. Years after its incorporation, this community continues to grow and prosper, providing opportunity and solidity to its citizens and to the Commonwealth.

I hope that you will join me in honoring this community by co-sponsoring this resolution.
