From: Representative Jordan A. Harris
To: All House members
Subject: Condolence Resolution Honoring the Life of Samuel Staten, Sr.

In the very near future, I will introduce a condolence resolution honoring the life of Samuel Staten, Sr. Mr. Staten was a former Business Manager of Laborers’ Local Union #332 and the former Secretary-Treasurer of the Laborers’ District Council of the Metropolitan Area of Philadelphia & Vicinity. Mr. Staten was born in Jacksonville, Florida, but came to Philadelphia as a youth, where he was educated in the Philadelphia school system. In addition, Mr. Staten was a former Board Member of the Pennsylvania Prevailing Wage Appeals Board.

On April 26, 2016, Mr. Staten passed away at the age of 80. He was an active member of his community and for 50 years he worked tirelessly on behalf of his fellow workers and sought to aid working families in the Philadelphia region. During his time with the Laborer’s District Council, Mr. Staten founded the Laborer’s District Council Charity Fund. In 2011, the fund was renamed the Samuel Staten, Sr. Charitable Trust in his honor. The Trust provides a variety of services to the needy and otherwise underserved communities throughout the five county Philadelphia region. In the past 16 years, the trust has raised $1,892,000 for these communities through various fundraisers, which includes an annual Charity Golf Classic.

During his career, Mr. Staten also held the following positions:

Trustee of the Laborers’ District Council Building & Construction Health & Welfare Fund, Delegate to the Philadelphia Building & Construction Trades Council, Board Member of the Philadelphia Housing Authority, Member of the African American Chamber of Commerce, Trustee of the Laborers’ District Council Building & Construction Pension Fund, Trustee of the Laborers’ District Council Education & Training Fund, Trustee of LECET and the LDC Health & Safety Fund, Trustee of the L.D.C. Legal Fund, President of the Philadelphia Building Trades, Board Member of the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority, chair of the PCCA Expansion Committee.

I hope that you will join with me in honoring the life of this important Philadelphian and Pennsylvanian.
