Subject: | Year of the Veteran in Pennsylvania |
In the near future I plan to offer a resolution recognizing 2016 as the Year of the Veteran in Pennsylvania. This recognition will highlight and celebrate the accomplishments of veterans and raise public awareness about issues related to veterans. There are roughly one million veterans living in Pennsylvania (88,000 in Philadelphia alone) with service spanning from World War II to the present. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, our active duty and retired military personnel have an economic impact of $1.5 billion in our communities across this Commonwealth. Philadelphia is the birthplace of the United States Army, the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps, highlighting our state’s important role in the history of our military. My purpose for introducing this resolution is to focus the attention of Pennsylvania’s leadership on veterans’ issues and to encourage service providers, veteran groups, and communities throughout the Commonwealth to channel their energies towards helping to improve service delivery to Pennsylvania’s existing and transitioning service members, veterans and their families. Please join me in honoring our brave men and women by declaring 2016 as the Year of the Veteran. Thank you in advance for your kind consideration. |
