Subject: | Benefits for Paid Fire Chiefs |
Recently, it has come to my attention that under Act 204 of 1984, police chiefs and heads of police departments of political subdivisions of the Commonwealth who had been forcefully removed from their bargaining units were granted equal pay as received by the highest ranking officer in said bargaining unit. In 1987, then Senator Roy Afflerbach introduced SB 960, amending the act of December 18, 1984 in order to provide fire officers under those same circumstances with the same benefit. At the time, Afflerbach was quoted as saying, “Apparently the only reason top fire officials were not included in Act 204 of 1984 was because fire chiefs never asked to be included.” However, after passing the Senate unanimously, the bill was referred to the House Labor Relations Committee, where it received no further action. Our fire personnel do a tremendous job in protecting our citizens, putting their lives on the line for our families and communities. In order to correct this oversight, and extend to a very small number of fire chiefs in this Commonwealth the same benefits received by our police chiefs, please join me to level the playing field by extending these benefits to those particular fire chief by co-sponsoring my legislation. |
