MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 30, 2016 11:33 AM
From: Representative David Parker
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution to Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Tobyhanna Conservation Association

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Tobyhanna Conservation Association. The Association was founded in 1966 by a group of twelve avid sportsmen who were dedicated to the idea of the preservation of hunting and fishing in the spirit of true sportsmanship through example.

The founding members believed that nature’s bounty, in providing man with fish and game is not inexhaustible, and that man, through sincere efforts, may aid in the propagation of fish and game species, and the improvement of their environment. The same still holds true to this day, as the Association charter states: “Conservation, a state of harmony between man and the land, and the proper harvesting of fish and game so as to retain nature’s delicate balance, shall be the purpose of this organization”.

Over the years, the organization has managed numerous projects and activities and has partnered with other organizations with common interests to further advance the conservation and sportsmen’s ethic. For example, the Association constructed and maintains a Children’s and Handicapped Persons Fishing Areas on the Tobyhanna Creek on Main Street in Tobyhanna that provides easy access to good fishing and is an asset to the community for all youngsters and persons with disabilities to enjoy the great outdoors.

Through the organization’s involvement with programs at the Monroe County Youth Conservation Camp over the past 25 years, they have facilitated the construction of over 500 bluebird boxes by children that are now scattered about the forests and fields of Pennsylvania. The Association has also participated in PennDOT’s Adopt-A-Highway program for over 15 years, picking up trash on over 7 miles of roadway several times a year in Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County. Members of the Association also participate in the Annual Tobyhanna Millpond #1 Ice Harvest, providing an appreciation of the importance of the historic natural ice industry.

Additionally, members of the Association assist the PA Fish & Boat Commission with stocking trout in public streams several times each year, and maintain a section of the Tobyhanna Creek as a “Delayed Harvest Fishing Area” in cooperation with the Commission. The Association is also affiliated with the Monroe County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs and the Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs to further promote conservation at the regional and state levels and to protect the future of Pennsylvania’s great outdoors.

I would respectfully ask that my colleagues consider cosponsoring this resolution, and joining me in commemorating this important milestone for the Tobyhanna Conservation Association.
