Subject: | Poison Prevention Week Resolution |
In the near future, I intend on introducing a resolution recognizing the week of March 20-26, 2016 as “Poison Prevention Week” in Pennsylvania. Poison Prevention Week exists to inform the public on steps they can take to help prevent accidental poisonings and what to do if a poisoning occurs. More than 2 million poisonings are reported each year to the 55 poison control centers across the country, including two in Pennsylvania. More than 90 percent of these poisonings occur in the home. The majority of non-fatal poisonings occur in children younger than six years old and poisonings remain one of the leading causes of death among adults. Congress established National Poison Prevention Week on September 16, 1961 as the third week in March. The resolution will include important information on how residents can stop poisonings from happening in their home, the specific actions they can take if such an incident does occur, and will recognize the outstanding work of the Commonwealth’s two poison centers, specifically the Pittsburgh Poison Center, which has become nationally recognized for its work. I hope you will join with me in this effort by co-sponsoring this resolution. PREVIOUS CO-SPONSORS - KIM, BAKER, VEREB, KIRKLAND, COHEN, V.
