Subject: | March 2016 as Intellectual Disabilities Awareness Month |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating March 2016 as Intellectual Disabilities Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. In fiscal year 2014/15, nearly 56,300 Pennsylvanians with intellectual disabilities received services and supports and more than 37,121 children, including significant numbers of children who have intellectual disabilities, received early intervention services. In addition, 13,781 person with intellectual disabilities continue to wait for services. These services and supports ensure that all citizens of Pennsylvania who have intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to participate in the range of life experiences we all enjoy in our homes and communities: inclusion in schools, neighborhoods, businesses and place of worship. Public awareness and education improve the community’s understanding of intellectual disabilities and the services and supports needed to meet the specific needs and abilities of people with intellectual disabilities. I hope you consider joining me in support of this resolution. |
