Subject: | Resolution designating April 2016 as "Sexual Assault Awaremess Month" in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I intend to offer a resolution declaring April 2016 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Pennsylvania This resolution will coincide with the national effort to raise awareness of and encourage public education about sexual violence. Everyday across the U.S., women, children and men of all racial, cultural and economic backgrounds are affected by rape and sexual assault. These experiences can have devastating long-term consequences for the survivor, as well as the survivor’s family and friends. Sexual assault has reached crisis proportions in schools and on college campuses. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, one in five women and one in 71 men will be raped during their lifetime. Even more disturbing, one in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before reaching eighteen years of age. Knowledge and awareness are the first steps toward prevention. It is important for all Pennsylvanians to learn why victims don't report or take decades to come forward. We need to support survivors and their families by speaking out against sexual violence and standing up for the safety and well-being of our fellow citizens. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this resolution. |
