| Subject: | Resolution Recognizing March 8, 2016 as “International Women’s Day” and March 2016 as “National Women’s History Month” in Pennsylvania |
| In the very near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing March 8, 2016 as “International Women’s Day” and March 2016 as “National Women’s History Month” in Pennsylvania. International Women’s Day was first celebrated in 1911. Annually on March 8, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements during International Women’s Day. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more. This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is “Pledge for Parity.” This year, the theme for National Women’s History Month is “Working to Form a More Perfect Union,” which honors the contribution that women have made to public service and government leadership. Although their work is often undervalued, these women have collectively influence public policy and built viable public institutions and organization. Women in public service and government leadership have championed basic human rights, fought for equal access to opportunity for all Americans, contributions which have strengthened our democracy. These role models, along with countless others, demonstrate the contribution that women have made to this country. Now is the time to honor and celebrate the women within our families and communities for their numerous contributions to our society. International Women’s Day and National Women’s History Month are ideal venues for all Pennsylvanians to reflect and recognize the struggle for women to obtain equal educational rights and to highlight the numerous contributions of women across the Commonwealth and the nation. I hope that you will join with me to honor and memorialize women across Pennsylvania. Together we can move closer to the day when society no longer needs prompting in order to value women and girls, a time when we all equally recognize and celebrate women and men of all backgrounds - every day of the week. |
