Subject: | Establishing an Annual Day of Recognition for Veterans of Vietnam |
Few conflicts in the history of the United States have been as divisive or as controversial as the Vietnam War. By the conclusion of the war, over 2 million Americans had served their country and over 58,000 men and women had made the ultimate sacrifice. For many veterans the horrors of war did not stay in Vietnam. Thousands of veterans returned home suffering from PTSD and other psychological issues. Thousands more suffering from exposure to Agent Orange. As they returned home bearing the physical and mental scars of battle, our country shamefully spurned the men and women who had sacrificed so much for our freedom. These brave American heroes who answered their country’s call, putting their life on hold, to serve their countrymen deserved better. In order to recognize their sacrifice and honor the memory of the fallen, I plan to introduce legislation which commemorate March 29th as “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” to serve an annual day of recognition for the veterans of Vietnam. As famed UPI war reporter, Jack Galloway said these individuals marked, “…the greatest of their generation…” and they deserve our recognition and our gratitude. Please join me and co-sponsor this bill to establish an annual day to honor the brave men and women who served their country during the Vietnam War.
