Subject:	Resolution Designating the Week of December 14 through 20, 2015 as "Gospel Music Week" in Pennsylvania

In the near future, both I and Representative Louise Williams Bishop plan to introduce a resolution designating the week of December 14 through 20, 2015 as “Gospel Music Week” in Pennsylvania. Gospel music traces its origins back to African-American spirituals written by slaves to express their religious faith while in bondage, and has emerged as a truly distinct American art form. As time progressed, gospel was shaped by other unique American musical styles such as ragtime, jazz and blues to become the well-known form of gospel music celebrated today. In addition to religious musical forms, gospel music has also greatly influenced the development of secular musical styles such as rock and roll, country, soul, and rhythm and blues; thus significantly impacting popular culture. By inspiring and entertaining across racial, ethnic, religious and geographic boundaries, gospel music is widely celebrated by residents throughout this Commonwealth, and by multitudes of diverse music lovers worldwide. Please join us honoring this beautiful music by co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation.
