MEMORANDUM

Posted: November 13, 2015 12:38 PM
From: Representative Kurt A. Masser
To: All House members
Subject: Continuing medical education classes in addiction and addiction treatment

In the near future, I will be introducing legislation which will require individuals who are applying for a license or certification, or renewing a license or certification, to have met a certain number of approved continuing medical education classes which address addiction and addiction treatment.

Presently, doctors and pharmacists received little if any training on addiction. As we see our growing problem with opioid dependency, having these providers well trained to diagnose addiction and assist in the treatment of addiction is fundamentally important.

My legislation would require 3 hours of training prior to being licensed or certified initially and 2 hours of training for each renewal period. Requiring this nominal training will begin to assist our health care providers in preventing and ending the cycle of addiction.

Thank you for your consideration.

Introduced as HB1805
