House of Representatives
Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 7, 2015 01:08 PM
From: Representative Katharine M. Watson and Rep. Tarah Toohil
To: All House members
Subject: Adoption Awareness Month - November

I will soon introduce a House Resolution designating the month of November, 2015 as “Adoption Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

More than 2,500 children in Pennsylvania are currently waiting to be adopted. For those children, the average stay in temporary care is more than three years. So, we must do all that we can to help them find their “forever families.”

Adoption provides a child with a lifetime connection to a family, profoundly changing the course of that child’s life by providing stability, security, love and opportunity. On a personal note, I am an adoptee and also an adoptive mother. I can attest to how my own life was transformed by the love and support of my adoptive parents, and how it has been immeasurably enriched by my adopted son.

This Resolution goes hand in hand with a package of legislation recently reintroduced in the House that is designed to reform Pennsylvania’s adoption laws and improve the adoption process in the Commonwealth. As Chairman of the House Children and Youth Committee, I am proud to be leading that legislative initiative, just as I am proud to sponsor this House Resolution. I hope you join me as a cosponsor of this House Resolution and also join me in continuing to raise awareness about the benefits of adoption.

Katharine Watson
