MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 22, 2015 12:05 PM
From: Representative Angel Cruz
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution designating Spanish as the official language of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

In the near future, I plan to reintroduce a resolution designating Spanish as the official language of the Commonwealth, and urging its use in all official acts of government.

The U.S. Census Bureau projects that the nation’s Hispanic population will reach 132.8 million by July 1, 2050, which will constitute 30 percent of the overall population of the United States. In an effort to communicate with the citizens of this nation, Pennsylvania must be forward thinking and preemptive in addressing and embracing both an impending local and national demographic transformation. Latinos are the largest minority ethnic group in the United States today, with more than 838,000 residing in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania’s Hispanic population is important to the Commonwealth’s economy and continues to play an integral role in the cultural diversity of our state.

By co-sponsoring this legislation, you will join me in serving the overall interests of our state government and its citizens. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
