| Subject: | Resolution urging Congress to designate Spanish as the official language of the United States |
| In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution urging Congress to designate Spanish as the official language of the United States, and to mandate its use in all official acts of the Federal government. Since the inception of our great nation, the United States has been devoid of an official and unifying language. Over ninety percent of the world’s nations, excluding the United States of America, have formally adopted an official language. With more than 336 million first language Spanish speaking persons worldwide, our nation and our government need to prepare for an inevitable national and global demographic transformation. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, it is estimated that the Latino population comprises 50.5 million of the total population of the United States and is expected to reach 132.8 million by July 1, 2050. Currently, the total number of first language Spanish speaking persons worldwide is only second to that Mandarin. In an ever expanding global economy, the ability of the United States to effectively communicate with the governments and citizens of other predominately Spanish speaking countries is critical in maintaining our hegemonic status throughout the world. Please join me in urging Congress to help bridge unnecessary cultural and language gaps by designating Spanish as the official language of the United States, and also mandating its use in all official acts of the Federal government.
