Subject: | Request for Co-sponsorship: Commemorating “Credit Union Week” |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution commemorating “Credit Union Week” in the Commonwealth, observed during the week of October 12 through 19, 2015. Pennsylvania is currently home to 470 credit unions, serving the needs of over 3,800,000 members statewide. These institutions combine the member’s personal resources with the leadership abilities of the board of directors to form a cooperative for the benefit of all. Credit unions are valuable institutions for many reasons. Based on the philosophy of “not for profit, not for charity, but for service,” these institutions exist to unite like-minded people to work for a better financial and economic future. As member owned not-for-profit financial cooperatives, credit unions focus on providing valuable financial services to their members, rather than turning a profit for shareholders. Affording a vote to each and every member, these institutions act as financial democracies, controlled and operated by their membership. Members receive valuable benefits such as financial education, lower than average bank card rates and low interest loans. Further, credit unions support and sponsor member’s charitable work, spurning involvement in local communities. I hope you will join me in supporting this resolution. |
