| Nearly 50 years ago, on November 14, 1965, the first major battle between American Armed Forces and the North Vietnamese took place. In what became known as the “Battle of Ia Drang Valley”, during 4 days of intense combat, Americans fought the North Vietamense. When the battle ended on November 18, 250 brave soldiers had been killed and 242 wounded. Through the bravery and sacrifice of our soldiers, America won the battle which marked the beginning of 10 years of war. By the conclusion of the Vietnam War, over 2 million Americans had served their country and over 58,000 men and women had made the ultimate sacrifice. For many veterans the horrors of war did not stay in Vietnam. Thousands of veterans returned home suffering from PTSD and other psychological issues. Thousands more suffering from exposure to Agent Orange. As they returned home bearing the scars of war, our country shamefully spurned the men and women who had sacrificed for our freedom. In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution to honor the veterans of Vietnam which will commemorate November 14th, 2015, as Vietnam Veteran Recognition Day. As famed UPI war reporter, Jack Galloway, who was on the ground at the Battle of the Ia Drang Valley said these individuals marked, “…the greatest of their generation…” This resolution will also urge the federal government to establish a national day of recognition. Please join me and co-sponsor this resolution to honor the brave men and women who served their country during the Vietnam War. |
