Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: July 22, 2015 10:22 AM
From: Representative Eddie Day Pashinski
To: All House members
Subject: Grandparents' Day Resolution

In the near future I will introduce a House resolution observing September 13, 2015 as Grandparents' Day in the Commonwealth.

Since 1978 America has recognized the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents' Day. Just as the nation was shaped by our founding fathers, families are shaped by their succeeding generations. And grandparents play a significant role in keeping family histories alive.

But the role of grandparents has changed dramatically since 1978. Rather than connecting us with our past, many grandparents are shaping the future of their families by actively raising their grandchildren.

Nearly 80,000 Pennsylvania grandparents are raising their grandchildren. And this number increases every year.

It is the ultimate act of love, but it doesn't come without a cost. Grandparent caregivers face many challenges including the personal costs associated with raising a child, stress and the lack of a support network.

So this year as we honor our grandparents with my House resolution, I will include a special honor to the many grandparents who, instead of slowing down in their retirement, are busy raising another family.

Please join me in honoring grandparents who enrich their families and, in many cases, have put their retirement on hold to help raise our next generation.
