| Subject: | Linglestown 250th Anniversary |
| In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of Linglestown, Pennsylvania. Pioneer Scot-Irish families, banished from their homeland in Scotland in 1718 because of religious differences, immigrated to America. Many of them traveled down the Susquehanna and soon after, German settlers followed. They recognized the beauty and potential for farming in the rich soil and the plentiful forest land for buildings and chose to settle in what is now known as Linglestown. Mr. Thomas Lingle arrived in the area from Berks County in 1765 and decided to establish a new town. After purchasing the land and laying out the 80 lots, he named it ‘The Town of St. Thomas’ and because Mr. Lingle founded the town, many people referred to it as Lingle’s town. After Mr. Lingle died in 1811, the former name of the town was dropped and the name was unofficially changed to Linglestown. Since then, the town has continued to thrive by farming, opening schools and hosting fairs. Linglestown is a small village with a big past and there is much to celebrate for their 250th Anniversary this year. Please join me in celebrating the great history we have in Pennsylvania with the development of historic towns such as Linglestown. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution. |
