Subject: Renaming of Bridge to Trooper Herbert A. Wrifel Memorial Bridge

I will be introducing legislation to rename a portion of the Tower Road Bridge in Croyle Township to Trooper Herbert A. Wirfel Memorial Bridge to honor a Pennsylvania State Trooper who lost his life February 7, 1982 while on duty.

Specifically, the bridge is located on Tower Road in Croyle Township and spans across U.S. 219.

Trooper Wirfel was born in New Germany, PA on October 16, 1936 and is the son of the late John and Genevieve Wirfel. He was the second oldest sibling of nine children.

He served with the US Air Force from December, 1956 to December, 1960. He enlisted in the Pennsylvania State Police in Portage in 1961. Following his graduation from the academy, he was assigned to Troop D in Butler, PA.

While on duty on February 7, 1982, Trooper Wirfel was patrolling U.S. Route 22 in Cambria County where an unidentified motorist ran through the radar zone at a high rate of speed. As he pursued the vehicle, his vehicle struck a snow drift partially covering the passing lane and skidded off the highway into a frozen snow bank. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

At the age of 45, Trooper Wirfel completed 20 years and 5 months as a Pennsylvania State Trooper. He was buried with full military honors. He is survived by his wife and seven children.

Please join me in honoring Trooper Herbert A. Wirfel.
