MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 9, 2015 11:37 AM
From: Representative John Taylor
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Honoring All Those Who Provided Assistance in the wake of the May 12 Amtrak Accident.

On May 12, 2015, at 9:21 pm eastern standard time, northbound Amtrak passenger train No. 188 derailed at MP 81.62 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The train had seven-cars and one locomotive. The train had just entered the Frankford Junction curve at a speed of 106 mph where the speed is restricted to 50 mph. As the train entered the curve, the engineer applied the emergency brakes. Seconds later, the locomotive and all seven passenger cars derailed. Of the 250 passengers and eight Amtrak employees that were on board, eight passengers were killed and more than 200 others were transported to area hospitals. Damage is estimated by Amtrak in excess of $9.2 million.

In the near future, I will introduce a resolution honoring ALL the responders, Mayor Nutter, and neighbors around the crash site who helped in the wake of the Amtrak crash in Philadelphia on May 12, 2015.

This resolution honors:
  1. All responders to the accident who helped in the wake of the accident with search and rescue, medical attention, clearing debris, cleaning up, etc;
  2. Mayor Nutter for his leadership and unwavering support of the City’s resources to help those affected by the crash; and,
  3. All neighbors of the crash site are who were so generous with their time and to open their homes and offer assistance to responders and victims.
Please join me in sponsoring this resolution that I feel is important to show our appreciation for all those who helped to prevent the aftermath of the accident from being worse than it could have been.

Thank you for your consideration.
