MEMORANDUM

TO: All Members of the House of Representatives

FROM: Representative Tim Mahoney

DATE: June 4, 2015

SUBJECT: School Consolidation

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution respectfully urging Governor Tom Wolf to direct the Department of Education to conduct a study on the cost-savings of consolidating the Commonwealth’s school districts.

School districts have faced significant funding reductions and are increasingly unable to meet their students’ basic needs with already limited resources. Many have considered eliminating courses and extracurricular programs and are often forced to furlough teachers to address budgetary shortfalls and growing pension obligations. Unfortunately, this leads to reduced student achievement, which is the core function of public schools.

Consolidating school districts can reduce bloated administrative staff, produce significant cost-savings and increase efficiency and coordination among the Commonwealth’s 500 school districts. In addition to saving taxpayer money, consolidation will ensure our students are receiving a quality education that is not adversely impacted by wasteful spending and administrative complexity.

Please consider joining me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. Thank you.
