Subject: | Bridge Renaming to PFC Thomas A. Cooney Memorial Bridge |
In the very near future, I will be introducing legislation to rename a bridge in my legislative district to PFC Thomas A Cooney Memorial Bridge. The bridge spans Route 22 in Munster Township. The road is currently named Cooney Road. PFC Cooney of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, a World War II veteran earned the Silver Star for gallantry in action in France on October 20, 1944. While serving in the European Theater of Operation on October 20, 1944, PFC Cooney volunteered for a mine removal mission and continued in the face of enemy observation and direct hostile fire. He and his fellow engineers encountered heavy sniper and machine gun fire as they bravely cleared mines along a strategically important road in France. Although seeking to find cover as ordered, PFC Cooney was later killed in action along with three other engineers when a delayed-action mine detonated. PFC Cooney, was born on April 28, 1917, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cooney of Cambria County. He and his three brothers were raised on a farm outside of the Borough of Lilly. Please join me in honoring PFC Thomas A. Cooney. Thank you. |
