MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 20, 2015 11:02 AM
From: Representative Ted Harhai
To: All House members
Subject: Co-sponsorship: Honoring the Duquesne University Tamburitzans

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution that honors the Duquesne University Tamburitzans in the City of Pittsburgh.

The Duquesne University Tamburitzans are the longest-running multicultural song and dance company in the United States. The Tamburitzans were created in 1937 by Dr. A. Lester Pierce, who brought his "Slavonic Tamburitza Orchestra" from St. Edward’s University of Austin, Texas.

The Tamburitzans mission is to first, provide deserving students an education; and second, to perpetuate the varying folk cultures and traditions of Eastern Europe. Over the years, the Tamburitzans have recorded albums and have toured extensively (sometimes internationally) performing music and dance mainly from Eastern Europe and its neighboring folk cultures. Besides producing the longest-running live stage show in the country, the Tamburitzans organization is also a cultural and historical legacy at Duquesne University, and is part of the University’s Division of Student Life.

Throughout its 75-year history, the group’s mission and purpose has never changed. The Tamburitzans organization allows the traditions of the past to live on through music, dance, and many cultural resources. With the support of Duquesne University, and of their alumni and friends, we plan to remain both a tradition and a treasure not only in Pittsburgh but throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.

I hope you join me and co-sponsor this resolution honoring the Duquesne University Tamburitzans.
