Subject: Resolution Designating April 2015 as “Landscape Architecture Month” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution to designate the month of April 2015 as “Landscape Architecture Month” in Pennsylvania.

Landscape architecture originated in ancient times, specifically within the cultures of Persia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome, and subsisted with varying degrees of influence through history to modern times. In the mid-1800s, Frederick Law Olmsted, who is considered the founder of American landscape architecture, first rejected the name “landscape gardener” in favor of “landscape architect.” Olmsted is credited with establishing professional standards and pioneering the concept that parks and outdoor spaces should not only be well-designed, but serve as functional green spaces, particularly within large congested urban areas.

The public works program began during the Great Depression, at which time landscape architecture not only had a tremendous impact on urban planning and design, but more importantly on the design of national and state parks, local community projects, and parkways. For over a century, landscape architecture has combined creativity, insight, and expertise to enhance the beauty of our Commonwealth.

Landscape architecture not only provides for the design of parks, residential environments, and other natural open spaces, but also for the preservation of natural landscapes and the conservation of historic landscapes. In addition, landscape architecture balances artistic and scientific principals in planning, design, and management of natural and man-made environments.

Landscape architecture has made a tremendous contribution to the quality of life of residents of Pennsylvania. The design of community centers, plazas, and streetscapes continue to rejuvenate communities throughout the Commonwealth.

I hope you will join me in sponsoring this measure.
