MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 1, 2015 03:47 PM
From: Representative Todd Stephens
To: All House members
Subject: Taking Aim at Violent Criminals (Bill 2) -- Increasing the maximum available penalties for felons who illegally possess firearms

I am introducing legislation to give our judges the flexibility to impose greater penalties for felons who illegally possess firearms. Currently, a felon who is convicted of illegally possessing a firearm faces a felony of the 2nd degree – a maximum sentence of 5-10 years.

My legislation would increase the grading for this offense to a felony of the 1st degree providing for a maximum possible punishment of 10-20 years.

Felons who go on to illegally possess firearms are a danger to us all and we should allow our Judges to punish these offenders severely to better protect our communities.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation.

Introduced as HB1496
