MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 23, 2015 02:40 PM
From: Representative Stephen McCarter and Rep. Lynda Schlegel Culver
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Honoring Former Legislator Franklin Kury

In the near future, we will be introducing a resolution honoring former legislator Franklin Kury for his years of public service to the residents of this Commonwealth and, in particular, his prime role in drafting the language of Article I, Section 27 of the Pennsylvania Constitution, also known as the Environmental Rights Amendment.

Throughout his accomplished career, which included terms in both the state House of Representatives and the state Senate, Mr. Kury demonstrated qualities of leadership and teamwork, perhaps most notably in his tireless efforts to promote environmental conservation. To this day, Mr. Kury considers his greatest legislative accomplishment to be the bipartisan, unanimous passage of language he crafted that would eventually become Article I, Section 27 of the Pennsylvania Constitution, also known as the Environmental Rights Amendment. This article of our state’s Constitution has played an important role in ensuring that our Commonwealth’s residents are provided with clean air and water.

Though his time in the legislature concluded in 1980, Mr. Kury has remained active in state-related issues and still believes in doing what’s best for the people of Pennsylvania. When asked in a 2006 interview what advice he had for new members of the legislature, he stated, “remember who sent you.”

Please join us in sponsoring this resolution honoring Franklin Kury for his decades of public service.
