Subject: Resolution honoring Northwest Victim Services (NVS) of Philadelphia for over 30 years of outstanding support and advocacy on behalf of crime victims

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution honoring Northwest Victim Services (NVS) of Philadelphia for over 30 years of outstanding support and advocacy on behalf of crime victims. This resolution also congratulates NVS on the occasion of its first annual One-Step 5K Walk for Safer Neighborhoods.

Founded in 1981, NVS was the first community-based victim services program in Philadelphia and currently serves the 5th, 14th, 35th, and 39th police districts in the northwest section of the City. NVS is a nonprofit agency that provides numerous free services to victims of crime including crisis and supportive counseling, information about the criminal justice system, referrals to other government agencies, accompaniment to hearings and trials, and assistance in submitting claims to the Commonwealth’s Victim Compensation Assistance Program. Known for the compassion and effective service demonstrated by its committed staff, volunteers, and board, NVS has served as a model for other victim service agencies in Philadelphia, which have actively sought technical assistance and expertise from the organization’s leaders in organizing their own programs. In the 2012/13 fiscal year, NVS assisted an impressive 3,669 crime victims.

On April 25, 2015, NVS, in partnership with its sister agency North Central Victim Services, will host the first annual One-Step 5K Walk for Safer Neighborhoods. Beyond raising needed funds, the purpose of the Walk is to advocate for safer neighborhoods and educate the community about victims' rights. The Walk will occur during the 2015 National Crime Victims' Rights Week.

Please join me in congratulating Northwest Victim Services on its first annual One-Step 5K Walk for Safer Neighborhoods and honoring this dedicated agency for its integral role in caring for and assisting many of our most vulnerable residents.

Thank you for your support of this important legislation.
