MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Designating March 4, 2015 as “Pitt Day in Harrisburg”

In the coming days, we will be introducing a resolution designating March 4, 2015 as “Pitt Day in Harrisburg.” It is our sincere hope you will join us in this effort.

The University of Pittsburgh was founded in 1787, making it one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States. Currently, the University is home to approximately 25,000 undergraduate students and more than 10,000 graduate students. The University of Pittsburgh, a state-related institution since 1966, continues to advance in its mission as a leader in education, a pioneer in research, and a partner with the Commonwealth in economic development. Pitt employs more than 13,000 Pennsylvania residents at its main campus and campuses in Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown and Titusville, generating millions in tax revenue to our state and local communities, and the University ranks fifth among all American universities in terms of the federal science and engineering research and development support attracted by members of its faculty. For the 10th consecutive year, Pitt ranks as the top value among all public universities in Pennsylvania by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance.

This year marks the 19th Anniversary of “Pitt Day in Harrisburg,” giving members of the General Assembly an opportunity to talk with alumni, faculty, and students about their work and to gain a first-hand perspective of the challenges and changes facing public higher education. Alumni and friends annually travel to Harrisburg in order to meet with elected officials and to advocate on behalf of the University. The University of Pittsburgh’s “Legislative Day” started as a small breakfast gathering, attended predominately by local legislative staff, in the Chancellor’s office on campus. The event has flourished into “Pitt Day in Harrisburg” a daylong celebration of Pitt and its accomplishments in the Capitol. It is now regularly enjoyed by members of the Administration, General Assembly, their staff, along with alumni and friends of the University.

Please join us in designating March 4, 2015 as “Pitt Day in Harrisburg” and recognize the tremendous impact this institution has on our Commonwealth.
