MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 26, 2015 01:45 PM
From: Representative Anthony M. DeLuca
To: All House members
Subject: Pharmacy Technicians

I intend to introduce legislation that will require pharmacy technicians to register with the State Board of Pharmacy. In order to register with the Board, pharmacy technicians will have to meet certain requirements such as having a high school diploma, submitting to a criminal history background check and completing a board-approved training program.

Pharmacy technicians are unlicensed, unregistered employees who are supervised by licensed Pharmacists and assist in filling prescription orders. There is no state-required standardized training or minimal education requirements for pharmacy technicians.

Currently, 34 states including Maryland and New Jersey require pharmacy technicians to be registered. With the volume of prescriptions increasing and a growing shortage of pharmacists, it is more important than ever that employees assisting the pharmacist be trained and meet minimum standard requirements.

I invite you to co-sponsor this legislation. Thank you.
